History

Don Mueang International Airport is located approximately 25 kilometers north of Bangkok and about 46 kilometers from Suvarnabhumi Airport. As a historic airport that has been with the Thai people for a long time, it has been in service for over 100 years. Currently, it serves as a hub for Low-Cost Carriers (LCCs) and was ranked by the CAPA Centre for Aviation (CAPA) as the airport with the highest number of low-cost airline passengers in the world in 2016 (World’s Busiest Low Cost Carrier Airports).

 

Due to the growth of the low-cost airline market, air traffic at Don Mueang International Airport has increased significantly. In 2017, Don Mueang Airport handled a total of 37.1 million passengers annually, comprising 13.2 million international passengers and 23.9 million domestic passengers. The majority of passengers using Don Mueang Airport are from China, Thailand, and Malaysia, respectively. They travel mainly for leisure, tourism, and family visits, typically spending around 1-3 days per trip.

 

Don Mueang International Airport has two passenger terminals. Terminal 1 is used for international flights, while Terminal 2 is used for domestic flights. The airport has also opened Pier 5 and the South Corridor, increasing its capacity to accommodate 30 million passengers per year.

 

In 2017, Don Mueang Airport handled passengers from three main regions, namely East Asia and the Pacific, Southeast Asia, and South Asia.

 

Don Mueang International Airport Phase 3 Development Project

 

The Airports of Thailand Public Company Limited (AOT) has initiated the Phase 3 development project for Don Mueang Airport, spanning from 2018 to 2024. The construction includes a new international passenger terminal (Terminal 3), a Junction Building that will connect to the Red Line commuter train system, and a parking facility that will accommodate approximately 8,000 cars. Upon completion, Don Mueang Airport is expected to enhance its capacity to handle up to 40 million passengers per year.
